When was the charging map updated? That is only the first question
A practical reading of official Canadian and U.S. charging directories: what an import date can tell you, what it cannot, and how to plan around the gap.
A recent date beside a charging map can feel reassuring. Depending on its label, it can record a recent import, update or verification, but the meaning depends on what was collected and how. For an electric road trip, that distinction matters: a fresh directory record and a connector that is free when you arrive are different kinds of evidence.
One directory can contain several clocks
The U.S. Department of Energy’s Alternative Fuels Data Center describes three ways station information enters its locator. It imports connected-network data through APIs daily, imports spreadsheets periodically according to when a network shares them, and manually verifies non-networked stations every other year. Those clocks answer a directory question: when did this catalogue receive or verify information under that method? They do not, by themselves, say when an individual connector was last observed, whether a driver is using it now, or whether you will be able to start a session later today. A same-day API import is useful evidence of a recent transfer; it is not a reservation or an arrival guarantee.
Why two official-looking maps can disagree
Natural Resources Canada says frequent updating and verification are strengths of its station locator. The department also warns that databases can vary because organizations use different collection methods, confirmation practices and inclusion criteria. Our interpretation is that a disagreement should begin an investigation, not end one. One map may have received a network file more recently. Another may include a site under different rules, group ports differently or be waiting for confirmation. The difference does not establish which connector will work. It tells you to check the exact location, operator and kind of date before relying on either display.
Read the label before the date
Ask what the timestamp describes. “Last import” refers to movement into a directory. “Verified” needs a stated method. “Available” needs a source, a connector scope and either an observation time or an explicitly bounded age. If the label is unclear, treat the date as evidence about the map’s process rather than the condition of the equipment.
Consider a hypothetical rural leg with one preferred stop and one reachable alternative. The preferred stop appears in a directory imported today, but no connector-level status is shown. The alternative has older location details and a recent operator status. These facts answer different questions. Rather than ranking them by date alone, confirm compatibility and access, keep the unknown status visible, and decide early enough that the alternative remains reachable.
A five-minute directory check
Before a consequential stop, compare the directory record with the operator’s own site or app. Match the address and station name, check the connector and access instructions, and note exactly what each date describes. If recent availability is absent, write down “unknown” rather than converting a current-looking page into a current-looking charger.

- Keep missing connector availability marked as unknown.
- Choose a reachable alternative before the decision point passes.
